So, I have been following sweethomestyle for a bit now on Tumblr. They post an overwhelmingly large number of delicious pretty house pictures everyday, for my viewing enjoyment. So much, in fact, that sometimes I find it hard to keep up with them all, and take whole afternoons (or portions thereof) to catch up. It’s like an addiction. I can’t miss even one. What if that is the life changing inspiration photograph I am destined to see?! That’s the fun of it. And I wondered at first if it meant I was uncreative, that I could not come up with ideas on my own, if I wasn’t one to think up, but one simply best at emulation, and poor attempts at that. I’ve moved on from such silly thoughts. It’s inspiration. Beauty seen is beauty reflected in your own way. I will see beautiful things, and thus I will make beautiful things. I’m crediting them with bringing me back out of my decorating slump, which will end tomorrow afternoon when I crack upen the bucket of green paint I bought two months ago, and finish painting the living room. I will post pictures, and you will love them. You will. But I’m also crediting them with helping me to articulate and see more clearly the design elements which I truly like, and in turn hopefully I can better find a way to bring this varied assortment of likes together in my own space.
So far, I’ve made the following list of elements that continually pop up in the images that best catch my eye:
- canopies
- freestanding tubs
- bright colors
- uncaged, natural pools
- dense gardens
- scrolly furniture
- eclectic pillows
- vertical striped upholstry
- tree wall stencils
- sharp contrasts
- cleverly designed kids’ spaces
- elaborate staircases
- damask-style wallpaper
- outdoor candle-lighting
- antique birdcages
- creative bookshelves
I feel like I’m about to embark on an adventure!
